LG Ultrafine 5K M1 Mac spurious vertical shift in a 2 inch band on screen

I recently got a M1 Mac Mini, and have been using it with my 2019 LG Ultrafine 5K display (made in ¡Mexico!). Previously I used it with my Intel-based MacBook Pro with no problem at all, though there is one problem that I keep on hitting with my new M1 Mac. At times during boot somehow it creates a permanent vertical band in which every pixel is shifted from its position by a few points in Y-direction. It happens randomly, and unless I reboot my computer the effect doesn't go away. The vertical band appears around center of screen. Interestingly, if I take screenshot or record a QuickTime video when the problem appears, it does not seem to appear after reboot. So the problem is not recordable using built in screen recording applications. I will take a picture from my phone camera next time around for the Apple team, I wonder if anyone else in the community has had similar problem? I have done my part by filing the bug to Apple, but have received no response.

Hi Ross,

I can confirm that using the USB-C cable seems to avoid the problem.

I have an M1 Mac mini and a LG UltraFine 5K monitor that was purchased in November (so presumably it's the latest incarnation). It came with two cables:

  • Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) with white lightning bolt symbols at each end
  • USB-C cable

I've also tried a USB-C cable purchased at a local store. Here's what I've found:

  • The LG provided Thunderbolt 3 cable sometimes shows the vertical band of shifted pixels. The problem can be induced or fixed by sleeping the monitor via a hot corner, though it might take a few tries.
  • The LG provided USB-C cable does not show the problem. I slept the monitor and canceled logins to get a black screen a couple of dozen times and could not reproduce it.
  • The "store bought" USB-C cable does not work at all. It does not drive the monitor - the monitor stays black. That avoids the problem but it's a poor solution. ;-)

As you've pointed out, the sacrifice with the LG provided USB-C cable is that one maxes out at 4K (3840 x 2160).

I'm going to call Apple again to see where they're at with this.

Glad I found this thread!

I recently purchased the LG UltraFine 27MD5KL-B and 16GB Mac Mini M1 and very happy with both products. In fact, they're both absolute tops as far as I'm concerned.

The occasional vertical shift is a little irksome, though. I find bringing the Mini out of sleep mode seems to be the most common trigger for vertical misalignment in my situation.

Not a deal breaker for me but would obviously prefer to see the situation resolved with a future update.

I think the monitor is fine....the pixel shift only appears rarely. If I put the computer to sleep it goes away for a number of days.

Considering this issue I decided to just put up with it because it only takes a few seconds to correct it.

However, if returning everything and starting over with a different computer and monitor works for you that is fine.

I just decided to put up with it...

However, this issue should have never come up considers the price of the monitor.

Again, no one really knows what is causing this...people have changed cables, sent monitors back to LG etc.

If one can not live with it I would start all over again.

I did 11.5 update in early June. The update did not resolve the issue to the end – I saw vertical shift in the middle of the screen, not as wide as before, only several pixels width. It happened 2 or 3 times since the date of the update, and there is another annoying thing. Sometimes the screen goes blank for 1 - 2 seconds after awakening from sleep. Looks like they check whether the screen is correctly synchronized with the computer and, if not, put it to sleep and wake it up automatically, just as we did before the update to 11.5.

UPDATE: Apple handed us a direct swap out in store. Called LG about the problem but they refused to read any reviews or listen to feedback about the problem. Hard core liability shifting by low level staff who present as disinterested in facilitating any tangible outcome for the customer. They just waste your time with inane emails back-and-forth. "repair" offer on a brand new screen is unacceptable.

New 2nd LG screen out of box, 3 days later, banding is back. This screen is crap. And for $1900 - what a joke LG. I'm getting a full refund and backing another brand. Done with LG. Up yours.

I too am having the exact problem. Brand new M1 Mac Mini and Brand new LG Ultrafine 5K. Vertical shift that comes out of nowhere and goes away at reboot. Will follow this thread in hopes of figuring our how to fix... permanently. I am using the supplies Thunderbolt cable. It is annoying for sure and would like to know why it is happening and how to fix. Unplugging the cable from the back of the monitor doesn't seem like a good fix.

Confirming that the problem occurs with the new Belkin Thunderbolt 3 cable as well, so it does not look like it's the fault of the original thunderbolt cable that came with the LG 5K monitor (that I ordered from Apple). I included the camera in the picture I took to see how the vertically-shifted band lines up on its right side with the center of the camera/screen. I'll update my Apple support case with the results of this test this week and see what they say...
