Low Ram

I have just bought a late 2020 Mini Macwith 16gb of Ram. Most of the time it says i only have 2gb free Ram, is this normal?? I paid extra thinking it would be better than my old Mac.

Yes, with newer versions of Mac OS, it is normal. The operating system will try to utilize as much RAM as it needs, as this provides the fastest throughout of data. If you operational issues with the Mac, it may be worth investigation, but RAM usage is generally not a cause for concern.

Yes, but stedman1 is plain wrong: OS RAM usage has actually become more efficient with OS releases. You can see it in Activity Monitor under Wired Memory. Mine takes up as little as 1.66 GB.

The issue is with Apps. Reduce as follows:

  • Clear cache on Safari - big drop
  • Quit unused Apps including Safari (not by clicking on the red dot but commanding a quit usually under File > Quit)

Enjoy...
