Saving Word documents in Big Sur

Since downloading Big Sur, I cannot save a Word document when the document is maximized (green circle). It immediately and continually shifts between the document (with Save dialog box visible for an instant) to the desktop, then to the document, then to the desktop. I can exit this shifting with the ESC. I can save the Word document is NOT maximized.
