I bought a USB adapter for my new MacBook Air. The usb cable doesn't fit into the usb side of the adapter. Did I buy the wrong thing?

Which USB version did you buy? There are several different evolutions

USB-A the old style big rectangular one, found on many computers in the last 20 years or so

USB-B usually found on the other end of a USB cable. Fits printers and things like that.

Mini-USB a much smaller connector, fits some older smartphones, about 3mm high by 6mm wide with chamfered sides

Micro-USB a slimmed down version of Mini. About 2mm high x 6mm wide with chamfered sides

Then came USB-C, found on new MacBooks etc. Symmetrical connector fits either way up. About 8mm wide x 1.5mm high with rounded ends. Usually found as the same connector on both ends of a cable, although some cables exist with USB-A or Lightning plugs on the other end.
