Storage Space Issues on MacBook Air

Why is "System" taking up so much storage space on my MacBook Air laptop? It's taking up 89.93GB. My apps and docs are only taking up about 26GB. I keep getting messages that I am running low on storage space but I can't figure out what in "System" is taking up so much space!! Help!!

It is known that the details in the Storage Management section is usually incorrect so just disregard the details. The only important factor is how much free space is reported by the Finder.
