How to stop text files from opening in Pages app?

Since it was introduced in iOS 11, I have been using the FILES app almost daily. I have a lot of notes stored as .TXT files on my iCloud drive which I open to simply view, not to edit. I would navigate through the FILES app, find the file, tap on it, and the file would open inside of the FILES app in a read-only (Quick Look) mode. This was great and exactly what I needed.

A few weeks ago I long-pressed on a text file to get the pop-up menu. I was looking for some other options at the time, but I tapped on share and eventually on the Pages app on the share sheet. The text file opened in pages (which at the time I meant to do). However, now every .TXT file is associated with and opens in pages. Instead of retaining the .TXT file format, it copies the text file and converts it to a pages document. I do not want this to be the default action.

Since then, I have been unable to find a permanent way to remove this file association with the Pages app. I want the Quick Look option to be the default for viewing .TXT files in the FILES app as it originally was. If I delete the Pages app from my iPhone, that works and the text files once again open with Quick Look. But as soon as the Pages app is reinstalled, the file association returns automatically and the text files once again open in Pages.

Is there anyway to permanently remove this file association?

I have looked at other txt editor apps. Installing one will allow me to perform the share steps again and change the file association to that app instead. After that, if I delete the text editor app, the file association returns to Pages. I just want it to use Quick Look as the default again and there does not seem to be any way to restore this functionality.

Thank you for any advice in this matter.

“...There should be a way to remove or reset the association. If that does not exist, then it should be added....”

Yep. Put in a feature request.

My comment re Apple ecosystem, most apps have their data associated with the app. Delete the app and the data goes with it. eg Photos or music apps.

The Files app was put there to deal with foreign data files.

Thank you for the reply.

However, the Files app I am referring to is a built in Apple App that is part of iOS since version 11.0. I am not sure how that falls outside of the Apple ecosystem if it's an Apple produced app that is part of the OS. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/files/id1232058109

In my opinion, the pages app did not cause this problem. Until I tried opening a text file stored on my iCloud Drive from the Apple Files app and chose Pages as the app to open it. Before that, tapping on one opened the file via the quick look option. Now every time I tap on a .txt file in the files app, pages opens. That is a file association by definition.

So, there is something in iOS associating the .txt file extension to the Pages app on my phone. There should be a way to remove or reset the association. If that does not exist, then it should be added. Of course, that's just my opinion, but it seems like a glaring omission. Any other OS in existence allows file associations to be managed.
