Cardio Fitness not working on my Apple Watch Series 6 (or on my previous Series 5)

I have owned an Apple Watch (first series 5 and now series 6) since November of 2019. I frequently run or walk outdoors for much more than 20 minutes at a time and I always use the Apple Watch Workout app, selecting either Outdoor Walk or Outdoor Run, accordingly. In 14 months of this outdoor activity (hundreds of runs and walks by now), I have only had Cardio Fitness data recorded ONCE (December 5th, 2019, and called VO2Max then). Before and since that random single entry, NO DATA has been recorded for VO2Max or Cardio Fitness. I compared the other workout parameters (exercise time, heart rate information, active calories) for that single workout that recorded a VO2Max entry with the data from my hundreds of other workouts but I don’t see any significant differences, other than the fact that VO2Max data was NOT RECORDED. When I traded my series 5 watch for a series 6 this past November 2020 I had hoped that this feature would start working, but nothing has changed (NO DATA for Cardio Fitness, aka VO2Max). I don’t normally take my phone with me with I exercise outdoors, but even when I do, NO DATA is recorded for this parameter. I have reset my Fitness Calibration Data several times in an effort to get this feature to work, but still NO DATA is ever recorded. What really has me confused is that it did work ONCE, but has not worked before or since that one day and I didn’t do anything different on that one day. Any ideas? Is this a know bug?

Hello, i had a same issue, no data source etc. so i did the following, 1. Made My current watch as priority source 2. Recalibrated my watch 3. ( standard setting on watch) i had by default power saving mode on, which resulted into no continuous heartbeat tracking but sporadic( which is used to calculate VO2max) i switched it off in Watch app dock> Settings> workout> power saving mode 4. Then 2 outdoor walking workouts of approx 40 min each and today after 2nd workout vo2 max appeared and data source got updated.

hope it will help!

Glad it’s working for you. What do you think made it start working? As documented here, I have been down that same route with Apple support 4 times (downloading diagnostic software to my phone, doing multiple outdoor run and/or walk workouts, then letting them download the logs and sending them screen captures of various fitness app displays) but I still don’t have any Cardio Fitness data being generated, so it isn’t solved yet for me. The last time I went through this process with Apple support, they told me they “might” contact me again but not to expect it. They also said they thought it was a software problem and hoped to include a fix in the next IOS update. Time will tell.

Hi, just had an email off Apple support but they are saying there is a problem with the heart monitor and it’s not reading all when running. Missing chunks. Also the data collected last week is saying that it’s February. And now best of all they are saying that when the tracked the run there was lots of hills on it and should be running on the flat because of some readings that are over 5% incline. Christ almighty these are basic things. Now have to update the watch and phone again and he will have to download software to the phone to log the new run again and give details of the run less then 30 minutes after. Apple Watch is a crock of ****. I went on my treadmill at home yesterday and the watch is telling me that I was 2 miles shorter. I know this goes off the heart monitor but it’s not even close. The Nike app is about a Mile off. I’m surprised that there is not more outrage about these useless glorified watches.

Yes I do what Apple refers to as “functional strength training” and blast every other day doing HIIT on an exercise bike. Neither has any affect on VO2 Max. But if I take a leisurely walk in the park with my dog - bingo.

At the moment this can’t be classed as a fitness watch. Yes, it records how long I’ve trained but I could do that with a stopwatch and pencil and paper.

People seem to have got it working in previous posts but I think it’s just pure fluke. All you can do is ring Apple and tell them and they will probably go through the same procedures and they may get it to work. Mine is working but it’s definitely not right and the heart monitor readings are not actual and chunks of live data are missing. I’m waiting for them to come back to me to go through the whole process again. I don’t actually think they know themselves. Big own goal for Apple.

(Still not buying it. Set up Cardio Fitness Levels – Apple Support See bikes anywhere? You most likely had this A new Apple Watch alert tells you how fit (or unfit) you are. Here's how to get it - CNET to quote "You won't even have to break a sweat to get your cardio fitness score. VO2 max on the Apple Watch can be calculated as you're moving normally about your day and not necessarily during a strenuous exercise, as long as it gets your heart pumping. It's also backwards compatible, meaning you'll be able to see your score immediately after updating the watch if you've already had VO2 max information on the app". )

Btw your Vo2 is wickedly low. I am worried about you!

Bill636, thanks for your thoughts. Yep, the activity app is showing the individual workout data on both my watch and my phone (that’s how I review my workouts after the fact). I agree, the only thing that’s missing is the VO2 data, which is the root of the problem. As for the quality of the HR data in each workout, I have literally logged hundreds of outdoor runs over the past year and a half using three different Apple watches. Yes, sometimes there is HR data drop outs, but not very often. For the majority of my workouts I get solid HR data throughout the workouts as evidenced by a post workout review of the data via the Workout app. And, Apple Support confirmed that my data looked good enough to have generated VO2 data, they just could not figure out why it wasn’t being generated. But, like I said, they told me that many users are experiencing the same problem and they claim to be working on a solution. I really hoped that last weeks IOS updates would have fixed it, but that wasn’t the case.

And for anyone else still reading this, in addition to the settings I mentioned above, I have also tried the following:

  1. Having my phone with me;
  2. Leaving my phone at home;
  3. Having Apple Maps open on my watch;
  4. Having Apple Maps open on my phone;
  5. And, every other suggestion posted in this thread.

Nothing has worked to generate VO2 max for me. So, I will remain disappointed that Apple has not followed up with me after my three separate interactions with therm, and I remain disappointed that a feature that Apple advertises just plain doesn’t work for me.

I hope at some point in the future Apple will find a fix and Cardio Fitness data will finally appear for me, but for now I will assume that this feature just doesn’t work and accept that fact.

Hi Giseledonovan. Each time I recalibrated the fitness data (which I have done lots and lots of times), I always followed it up with several steady pace, 20 minute + “outdoor walk” and/or “outdoor run” workouts on level ground. Didn’t fix the issue for me.

Hi Lardandindustrialsolvents. Each time I switched to a new watch (Series 5 to Series 6, then to a replacement Series 6), I unpaired the existing watch and paired the new watch as a new watch (not from backup). I have also tried unpairing my various watches, restoring them to factory, and repairing them (sometimes as a new watch and other times from a backup). Didn’t fix the issue for me.

Hi Captainbigglesworth. I saw your original suggestion and I have tried it on several occasions (add manual Cardio Fitness entry, then did several steady pace, flat terrain, 20 minute + “outdoor walk” and/or “outdoor run” workouts). Didn’t fix the issue for me.

Thanks to all of you for the suggestions though. I am very fit and my Garmin 920XT watch (that I used before getting my first Apple Watch) gave me VO2 max numbers that were very high (as I expected for my fitness level). I almost wonder if the watch is trying to calculate a Cardio Fitness number for me but it is outside the parameters of the algorithm and therefore just not reporting anything. Who knows.

But, for convenience sake (not having to wear an extra HRM like I had to do with my Garmin 920XT), I will keep working out with the Apple Watch, I just will try to ignore the fact that the Cardio Fitness feature that Apple advertises just doesn’t work for me.

Actually I’ve just realised there now that when I’m doing these outdoor walks there is no heart rate mapping 😱! So clearly that must be my problem. I’m getting full heart rate mapping for all my hiit sessions and core training and functional strength sessions but when I do the ‘outdoor walks’ it just says heart rate chart not available! My watch is always on properly might try the outdoor run tomorrow and see if that will give me a heart rate map!

Good news! Just as I had given up on the Apple Watch Cardio Fitness feature -- it just started working!

From the Show All Data button I find data starting on May 6 and daily until May 17 (yesterday). I've walked a couple of miles today and hope that will show up - maybe after my second walk.

I have been one of the people on this community forum who has been complaining about the lack of a solution - and then it solves itself. Only thing I can come up with is that my phone (iPhone 8) upgraded to iOS 14.5.1 a couple of weeks ago.

Also, previously the Health app displayed no Data Sources. Now it says my Apple Watch is the source of the Data. And the App allowed to read Data is Heart Analyzer. Previously, these have been blank or empty.

So I don't know what I did - other than explore the various app settings - but I'm pleased and surprised this feature is working.

ps. You may remember I got the watch after a serious open heart surgery in December. The other good news is that, in measuring my Cardio Fitness data, it displays a consistently HIGH Cardio Fitness V02 level -- 44.8 . . 44.9. .45 - for the past 12 days. Very encouraging to my rehab and fitness attitude.

Thanks to all of you for your tips and guidance. Good luck with your quest to get this thing working.
