Sometimes when I get home, I plug in my 2020 MAcBook Air. I hear a "beep". I close the lid and the machine goes to sleep. In the morning, I open the lid and it says that it's charging (there is that little lightning bolt) but the percentage has not changed. Any thoughts?
And if the machine is turned off, it has never charged properly.

So far, it seems to have worked. We shall see...
It's still doing it. Most of the time, when I plug it in, I get a nice "beep", I close the lid and hours later, the percentage charge has not changed.
