Migrating to M1 MacBook Pro using Time Machine disabled internet connection
Hi
I just got a M1 MacBook Pro for use as my main business laptop and thought the best way to set it up would be to migrate my data and settings from my early 2015 MacBook pro using Time Machine. I was expecting the sort of seamless experience that I got when migrating my old iPad to an iPad Pro.
Once the migration had completed, I found that the M1 MBP was connected to the wifi but not to the internet.
I spoke with my neighbour (a Tech specialist) and concluded that the problem was probably being caused by the Kaspersky Internet Security app that had migrated over, so I tried to delete the app. The app was locked and required a Kaspersky uninstaller app to remove it.
I downloaded the Kaspersky uninstaller app on my 2015 MBP, copied it to a USB drive and tried to run it on the M1 MBP via a Nucleum USB-C hub. However, it required Rosetta 2 to be installed to run the Kaspersky uninstaller app.
As I had no internet connection, I couldn't install Rosetta 2 in order to remove the Kaspersky Internet Security app in order to get access to the internet. Nor would it download via 'Safe Mode' terminal commands.
In the end, I did some research, followed the instructions in this article, restored the M1 MBP to factory settings and set it up manually. This worked and it now connects to the internet. I am now copying over the files I need.
I'm a big fan of Apple products, and buy them for their simplicity and reliability. I just wanted to flag this issue so that others don't have to go through the same problems and waste their time in the process.
I also wanted to flag the issue to Apple as:
- Time Machine does not appear to be capable of migrating to the M1 MBP in a satisfactory and reliable manner - it needs further work or a warning to people to do a manual migration.
- Rosetta 2 was not included as part of the standard Big Sur package and required an internet connection to install it, leaving a circular problem of requiring the internet to gain access to the internet - should Rosetta 2 be included in the standard Big Sur package?
- Resetting the M1 MBP to factory settings was not obvious and took some research before I found this article on the Apple web site (the title 'If you get a personalization error when reinstalling macOS on your Mac with Apple M1 chip' is not obvious) - the means of resetting to factory settings should be made more obvious so that people can find that information more readily.
