Kindle for iPad app for iPad 2?
I restored my old iPad 2 to factory settings so my husband could use it for an ereader. The iPad 2 does not appear to be compatible with the Kindle for iPad app.
Am I (is he) out of luck?

The Kindle App requires iOS12 or later.
iPad2 can only be updated to iOS 9.3.5 (WiFi Only models) or iOS 9.3.6 (WiFi & Cellular models).
Apple ended update support for iPad2 in September 2016. Your iPad cannot be updated to iOS 10 or later major versions of iOS as the internal hardware does not meet the minimum technical requirements for new versions of iOS/iPadOS. This limitation cannot be bypassed; iPad2 is a 32-bit architecture device, whilst all recent versions of iOS/iPadOS are designed for 64-bit hardware platforms. iPad2 is effectively obsolete.
Compatible Apps for your iPad are increasingly difficult to find - as third-party developers are increasingly dropping support for older versions of iOS preceding iOS11/12/13. As older versions of Apps are removed from the Apple App Store, you’ll not be able to (re)download or install them - which may severely limit the usefulness and utility of your iPad. As such, if you want or need to access most current Apps, requiring more recent versions of iOS, you’ll need to consider replacement of your iPad with a newer or current model.
Of current models, even the entry-level iPad8 has specifications and capabilities that will massively outperform you current iPad - and is compatible with the vast majority of current Apps. Other models are more powerful still.
I hope this information provides helpful and succinct clarity as to your available options - and the limitations of your current iPad.

Try downloading the Kindle app to whichever iPhone and Apple ID account will be used on this iPad.
Setup the iPad.
It has to be setup under the same Apple user ID and password being used to download the Kindle app on the correct iPhone.
Then, go into the iOS App Store on the iPad under the Purchases section.
Look for the Kindle app and then attempt to download/install it to the iPad by tapping the cloud icon.
If there is an older version still available, the App Store will bring up such a pop-up message.
Tap OK and see if an older version of the Kindle app will download to that old iPad, or not.
Best of Luck to You!
There are, apparently, some older apps still being made available to old iPad models.
Netflix appears to be one of them, IF you have another more recent iOS device to download the most recent version to first.
This maybe true for some other well used apps, as well.
It is worth giving my above workaround a try.
Do you or your husband own a newer iPhone with individual Apple ID accounts?
Yes.
So the iPad 2 is essentially worthless as a single-purpose reader? The idea was to be able to read ebooks from our local library system.
Right! As LotusPilot has explained, the Kindle App requires software that cannot be run on such an old iPad. It does not have the necessary components to run the newer software.
There appear to be a couple of workaround procedures on the internet. I’d be willing to try one but I’d rather have it/them “validated” by an Apple Community user. 🙂
I doubt you will find an Apple Community member who would be willing to validate such a suggested procedure. If you are willing to risk disaster, it is up to you.
