Intercom not playing through my iPhone 11 speaker

Intercom works fine on my iPhone 8 but messages received on my iPhone 11 will not play through the speaker. Is anyone else having this problem? Any solutions out there?

It sounds like you are unable to hear messages through your speaker. Depending on what exactly it is you are playing, here are some resources that might help.


If this is the notification for messages, review Use notifications on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch to ensure it is set correctly and "If you don't see notifications for a specific app" for additional troubleshooting steps.


If this is when playing a voice message review If you hear no sound or distorted sound from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch speaker.


You can also try other troubleshooting steps:

  • Test other apps notifications or if voice messages, test the Voice Memos app.
  • Test when disconnected from Bluetooth in Settings to ensure it's not routing the sound.
  • Restart your iPhone

Thank you for the clarification. It sounds like it is not your iPhone speaker but the HomePod speaker with the intercom feature that your iPhone is not playing to. You can try some additional troubleshooting steps:


  • Ensure the HomePod is completely up to date: Update HomePod
  • Do the same for your iPhone: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
  • Toggle your settings off and back on for this device.
  • As it relates to the network:
    • Make sure this iPhone is connected to the correct Wi-Fi network. Note: Some routers have multiple bands, for instance one for 2.4GHz and 5 GHz, make sure it's connected to the same one.
    • If you have a VPN or security software, try without it as it can effect your network.


If it still continues after this, you may want to Contact Apple Support at this point.

Thank you for the additional information. Is it the case that you are using a third-party app? If so, you may want to ensure your app is up to date Update apps or use automatic downloads and if it continues, contact the app developer for assistance, How to contact an app developer.

Hi SnickZ,


The speaker works fine. I often use it as a speakerphone option for phone calls. It also works for listening to phone messages where I am given the option to select speaker mode for message playback.


This problem is specifically related to the intercom app. Have you used it? When I use it on my iPhone 8, there is no option to choose speaker mode for listening to intercom messages (as there is for message playback) it simply plays through my speaker automatically. On the 11, however, the sound does not play through the speaker.


In summary, the speaker works fine with other apps, I have verified that it's not a Bluetooth issue, and restarting the phone did not solve the problem.
