why did a desktop folder disappear from my imac?

I had a folder containing photographs on the desktop of my iMac. I opened it today and the folder was gone. But when I looked on the desktop of my Macbook Air, the folder was there. How did this happen, how do I get it back onto the desktop, and how can I keep this from happening again? Thanks for any information or advice out there!
