Sidebar will not display in preview

When I select "Hide Sidebar" in the View menu to un-check it, nothing happens. The Sidebar does not appear; the menu item remains checked. Re-starting Preview does not fix this. I can't find any help on the internet anywhere! I tried going in to view and customizing the tool bar and adding "view' but it was already there and it didn't help.
