Big Sur Thunderbolt connectivity to Sony Camcorder

Until upgrading to Big Sur I was able to import digital video from an 18 year old Sony Camcorder (Model DXR-TRV60E). This involved the purchase of a special Thunderbolt connector and another adapter fitted to the Firewire cable that actually connected to the Camcorder, but once all connected, iMovie could recognise the camcorder and could import the filmed material.

I have about 30 hours worth of tape (mainly of the kids over the last 20 years) and hence I really need the capability to get this information into the computer (a late 2015 iMac).

Can anyone tell me how to regain the capability that was there but has now been removed please.

(PS: I really do not want to down-grade back to Catalina if at all possible).

Hi, MaryportClarky,

Try these procedures and see if any of them resolve the import issue:

Deleting Preferences

Open iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and select to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects.  Deleting preferences is a safe procedure that will not cause data loss or disruption to your project.

Opening iMovie in a new library

Try opening iMovie in a new library.  To do that, open iMovie while holding down the Option key and then selecting to

create a new library in the box that appears.

Opening iMovie in a new user account

Create a new user account from System Preferences/Users and Groups and try to open and use iMovie in the new account. Alternatively, you can use the Guest account on your Mac for this purpose.

Safe Mode

You could also try booting up in Safe Mode (see Finder menu for instructions) and, after everything loads, immediately shut down and reboot in normal mode. Then see if iMovie works properly.

Updating iMovie

To update/redownload iMovie 10, drag your iMovie 10 app from the Applications folder into the trash, but do not empty the trash. Sign in to the app store and open your purchases folder by clicking on your name at the bottom of the app store side bar. You will see your purchases displayed, including iMovie 10. Redownload/update iMovie from there. If not successful, drag your present iMovie app out of the trash and return it to the Applications folder.

Resetting the System Management Controller

Try resetting the System Management Controller:

Resetting the NVRAM or PRAM

Try resetting the NVRAM or PRAM, although this issue would be fairly rare:

I have no idea what is causing the problem so you need to go through a number of troubleshooting steps to see if you can rectify it.

To begin with, shut down iMovie and delete the preferences as described below.

If that doesn't help matters there are other strategies to try.

iMovie DELETING PREFERENCES

If  iMovie starts behaving unexpectedly in any way for no apparent reason, the problem could be caused by corrupt preference files.

The cure for this is to delete the preferences.

Hold down the  Cmd and Option keys as you launch  iMovie and this window will appear.

Click “Delete Preferences” and  iMovie will open in the default (as-new) mode with no projects etc. on the interface.

You will have to navigate to any project you were working on and reopen it.  Your project libraries by default are stored in your Movies folder unless you have specified somewhere different.

Hi Ian,

Many thanks for your assistance, but after deleting the iMovie preferences I still cannot see the Camcorder that is attached to the Thunderbolt port.

Previously (i.e. when using Catalina) when I clicked on the iMovie 'Import' button, my Sony Camcorder would be visible int Devices list (if memory serves me correctly). Now it not there!

I also seem to think that the Camcorder (when connected and turned on) was recognised by Finder under the 'Locations' heading, and now it is not.

I think the problem might be more to do with Big Sur, than with iMovie...

Again, Thanks for your help,

Cheers, Alan.

Hello Rich, and many thanks for such comprehensive assistance.

I have tried to Delete Preferences from iMovie (see my response to Ian Brown's Post below) and this did not work (that is, I still cannot see my connected and powered-up Camcorder in the Import pop-up).

I have also tried your second suggestion, to open a new library, and again, the camcorder is NOT visible (as it used to be) in the Import pop-up.

I have created a new user, but I am temporarily blocked from exiting my original account due to performing a back-up of about 80GB of video data to a memory stick... I shall attempt your later suggestions as soon as this back-up is complete.

As I have related to Ian, I think this issue is more of a problem with the base OS (Big Sur) than with iMovie directly. The OS seems to have lost the ability to peer down a previously working Thunderbolt connection and see the Device at the other end of the wire.

Huge thanks for your assistance thus far... I will write again once I have performed the remainder of your steps.

Cheers,

Alan

Hello again Rich,

Many thanks for your useful suggestions, but the trick appears to be to attempt an import from the Camcorder using QuickTime rather than iMovie. QuickTime recognised my Camcorder, and then by some fortuitous coincidence which I will not even try to understand, so did iMovie.

Thanks you for taking the time and effort to get me editing again... the world would be a much better place if we were all like you!

Cheers,

Alan

You now appear to have the choice of capturing your DV tape in both iMovie and QTP.

You may know this already, but QTP does not capture the DV tape in the same format as you previously captured in iMovie.

If you want to capture in the same format that you did before in iMovie which is .dv , then you need to continue with iMovie.

There are 2 formats to choose from in QTP capture , depending on the Quality that you select , i.e. ProRes which has large file size and smaller MP4 .

Just thought I would mention this before getting too far in with 30 hours of tape capture.

Also bear in mind that QTP captures in one long clip whereas iMovie captures many clips coinciding with scene break , so this might be the deciding factor.

As you have already started with iMovie , might be best to stay with it.

Hello SurryFriends,

Many thanks for this information which really is genuinely useful.

Luckily, once I proved that the iMac COULD drag the video information from the Sony Camcorder using QuickTime, I immediately tried to import that short video file just made by QT into iMovie, and that was when I noticed that iMovie also recognised the camcorder, and hence I could continue with importing via iMovie.

I have much to thank the Apple Support Community for... the Apple Service chaps (who were ridiculously helpful) ran out of options and were suggesting that I regress back to Catalina. With everyone's help, I now have an upto date iMac and all of my video editing capabilities intact!.

Thank you for taking the time to pass on your expertise/knowledge to me.

Cheers,

Alan
