iPad Air not updating OS 13

First gen iPad Air here. Nice useable, tablet with nothing wrong. Now Apple created the end-of-life for this product by not allowing OS 13 updates. Several apps will no longer update either because they require v13.

My son has a Galaxy tablet and it is equal to or better than my iPad. Consumer Reports echos this. No upgrade or app issues there. So, my iPad goes on Craig's List and I will buy the Galaxy now at Costco. My last Apple device is gone.

Just too expense to keep up to date with Apple.

A first generation iPad Air can only be updated to iOS 12.5.

Apple ended major update support for iPad Air1 in September 2019. Whilst the iPad Air1 has since benefited from “point” security updates, it cannot be updated to iPadOS 13 (or any later major versions of iPadOS) as the internal hardware does not meet the minimum technical needs (CPU and RAM) of newer versions of iOS/iPadOS.

Whilst many App titles remain compatible with your iPad Air1, if you want or need to access to Apps requiring the most recent versions of iOS, you’ll need to consider replacement of your iPad with a newer or current model that supports iPadOS14.

Sorry, I appreciate that this may not be what you were hoping to learn.

I hope this information provides helpful and succinct clarity as to your available options - and the limitations of your existing iPad Air.

No one here cares.

FYI,

That 2013 iPad Air 1 was fully supported by Apple for a full 6-years until Sept. 2019.

It doesn't matter when YOU purchased this tablet.

AND Apple continued to support that iPad with security updates to date, for all of 2020.

That is why iOS 12 is up to iOS 12.5.

AND the Lion's share of app developers in the Apple iOS App Store are STILL supporting the 2013 iPad Air for, probably, until the end of 2021.

So, that will be 7 years of Apple device support, courtesy of a great many third party app developers.

You will find out the painful way just how long Google supports their Android devices and you will discover it is for a much shorter period of time.

AND do not forget all of the adware/malware and viruses found on Android devices.

Do what you will.

No one here really cares less what you do and what products you buy.

I am still managing to use older Apple iPads and mobile devices from nearly 9, 10 and 11 years, ago!

Good Luck!
