2009 upgraded iMac not getting past the boot screen

I have had a few issues with my iMac recently which has got me a bit stumped. It's got an internal SSD500 which was the start up disc but that seemed to have failed which prompted me to reinstall macOS High Sierra, max upgrade that I could do. I also put a version of that macOS on a usb so I could boot from that. I did want to go back to Sierra but some of the software I need to use won't work on that OS

I've managed to back everything up to my time capsule which also gave me a way into my iMac.

All of these options have now stopped and I can't even use command + r to get to the recovery options.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I need it for Uni

iMac 27″, macOS 10.13
