It's just a report. The actual blocking mechanism is enabled or disabled using Safari's Preferences > Privacy > Website tracking.

And it's only cross-site tracking it blocks. Tracking cookies associated with a particular website need to be deleted using the option just beneath it, under Manage Website Data...

If you are tempted to "block all cookies" most websites (like this one) just won't work without it. ASC uses cookies to tell Apple you remain logged in with the proper Apple ID credentials for example.

Blocking ads requires ad-blocking products, and none are completely free of side effects.

What you're experiencing is probably the unfortunate fact that there are literally no limits on the number of ads a website can host. Some of them are clogged by so many garish, attention-grabbing ads the website becomes effectively useless. That uselessness tends to become evident in older Macs running older operating systems with limited resources. Remember the outfits responsible for developing those ads work with high-end development workstations with comparatively unlimited resources, and the developers get paid according to how much attention those ads get. They don't care if that causes websites hosting those ads to load slowly or not at all.

John Galt,

Thanks for all the info much appreciated. I went to manage website and found all this crap on there maybe now all my ads will be gone I hop so. I use yahoo and get this big banner the I go to local newspaper and forget about it all these ads pop up can't even read newspaper without all those annoying ads. What do you use to block as much as you can on ads? I have Ghostery Lite from the apple store but when it was the old Ghostery not the lite one Was much better real less ads but since they went to lite it has been crazy. Any better one that I should use that maybe you use? I would be mist grateful to you and looking for a free one cause I have covid and sick as a dog muscle aches and vomiting not a good thing to have and lost my job due to covid and in northeast its crazy to get a job now.

Thank you for all your info. I really appreciate you helping me out.

That's easy—I don't frequent sites with a lot of ads. Most websites have some ads but so-called "news" sites are the worst.

For them you can try Safari's Reader mode: Hide ads when reading articles in Safari on Mac - Apple Support, and for iOS: Hide ads and distractions in Safari on iPhone - Apple Support. All the content with none of the ads.

Other than that if I want to see worthwhile content I'm happy to pay for it.

Unfortunately even some subscription sites have advertisements. I recently dropped a long time subscription to one formerly respectable news publication. Their monthly fee was bad enough but when an advertisement pops up causing the text I'm reading to jump around during a slow connection, that just doesn't work for me. Even worse are ads that obnoxiously cover the whole screen as you're scrolling.

I told them why I canceled but of course there's about zero chances of them changing anything.

I have heard good things about Ghostery and AdBlock but I don't have any personal experience with them.

I'm sorry to hear you're not feeling well and I hope you get better soon. Here's some entertaining reading for you during your recovery that explains some of the bizarre tech behind targeted advertising. Beware it has ads too, but Safari's Reader mode works perfectly. Try it.

Reader is up here:

Or Safari's View menu > Show Reader. It works best on websites that are primarily text-based; in other words it won't be available on shopping websites that need to work primarily with images.

Click it. It's like magic.

I don't always have a fast reliable Internet connection but it hardly makes a difference. If you have a fast Internet connection those bandwidth-intensive websites will load faster, but everything is relative. Advertisements are only increasing in their demands on resources that are either fixed and unchangeable (like your Mac) or the bandwidth made available to you by your ISP—which may not increase very often or at all.

Boy for you to have all these points you know what your doing?

Not all the time 😀 but I enjoy my Apple products and I enjoy helping others enjoy theirs.

Oh I overlooked that question. Points and levels are explained here: Build your reputation and get rewarded in the community. It's an imperfect system but I suppose it encourages participation.

Prior to the present "point" system this site had a predecessor (two predecessors in fact, beginning with the original Apple Tech Exchange) that merely kept a tally of the number of posts someone contributed which was arguably less useful.

Apple Tech Exchange transitioned to Apple Discussions, and later Apple Support Communities. About July 2000 everyone's accumulated "points" were transitioned to the current system according to some formula lost to history. Perhaps someone else might remember that formula because I don't.

ASC shows when a participant first joined (if you allow your profile to show that information) but there are a few here whose activity predated even that date. For example my participation here began in the mid-1990s using a dialup modem and Compuserve. Apple Tech Exchange pages looked like this:

http://web.archive.org/web/20000229162121/http://support.info.apple.com/te/te.taf

The pages loaded even slower than that.

What did we do prior to dialup modems and Compuserve. We had local community meetups where a bunch of Apple nerds got together in the basement of a library or church once in a while to swap software and discuss problem-solving. Mine happened to be known as the local MUG for "Macintosh User Group" but that name was very common. Yes we had coffee mugs made up with the colorful Apple logo.

Thank you John you the best. Too bad I did not have you email so we can talk one on one I know you want your privacy but your a guy I would love to get to know.

It had not occurred to me to check but MUGs are still around: https://www.apple.com/usergroups/

Thanks for giving me the motivation to look into that Frank!
