Long press accents

I'm a language student, so most of my papers and work are written in French which, as you can imagine, requires lots of accents. I know the method where you hold down the option key + another key to create accents, but there was another feature where if you were to say, hold the "e" key for about a second, a menu of each type of accented "e" would pop up. Then you'd either use the mouse to choose your preferred accent or just hit the correspond number on the keyboard to match the right accent. I'm curious if that feature is gone or if there's a way I may have accidentally turned that long press off?

Any help would be appreciated.

Merci
