New M1 Mac mini keyboard Lagging

So I've had my new M1 16g Mac mini for about 3 weeks now. a few days ago I noticed that when typing (whether it be google, safari, an email ect. the typing response/lag is horrendous. a few seconds. then all of a sudden all the letters will come out of nowhere. i tried turning off the keyboard and mouse and turning them back on. I tried restarting, I ended up completely shutting the computer down for a few minutes then starting back up and it fixed the issue for what seemed to be 12hours ..... I'm super P*ssed. does anyone have similar issues with the new M1's? do i need to send this thing back?

Yeahh, yesterday while I was chatting with Support a new Release came out:

macOS Big Sur‌ 11.2 improves Bluetooth reliability and fixes the following issues:

- External displays may show a black screen when connected to a ‌Mac mini‌ (‌M1‌, 2020) using an HDMI to DVI converter

- Edits to Apple ProRAW photos in the Photos app may not save

- ‌iCloud Drive‌ could turn off after disabling the ‌iCloud Drive‌ Desktop & Documents Folders option

- System Preferences may not unlock when entering your administrator password

- Globe key may not display the Emoji & Symbols pane when pressed

Let's all test it and report back, if it's still happening (I definitely had the Black Screen Problem, iCloud Drive and the Mouse stutters).

If you scroll back a few pages on this support thread, you'll see my comments as follows:

Try the suggestion on this web site. The suggestion is to install a utility called blueutil which supposedly will reset the Mac Mini's bluetooth module using a command line app. I then use a crontab job that will execute this utility (with command line arguments) to reset my bluetooth module at 2 am every morning.

So, check out that link where it described how you can download and install the utility called blueutil. I then have a crontab job on my Mac Mini to run this command every day at 2 am:

0 2 * * *
/opt/homebrew/Cellar/blueutil/2.9.0/bin/blueutil -p 0 && sleep 1
&& /opt/homebrew/Cellar/blueutil/2.9.0/bin/blueutil -p 1

If you're unfamilar with crontab, you can do a Google search for what it is on your Mac, and how you can use it to run commands at regular intervals.

So far, I've been running with no issues for the last few months.

Apple must be fully aware by now that they have a problem worldwide with bluetooth on the M1 Mac mini - that keyboard lag definitely occurs with their own apple wireless keyboards. I showed them a video of it happening on my own M1 mac mini with the latest apple magic keyboard - after which they gave me a full refund (after having the issue for months).

None of the software updates cured it. No one should have to go through the rigamarole of trying to find their own workarounds after paying out hundreds of pounds for this machine.

I could have just kept the keyboard wired in - then everything was OK - By why support a complete fiction that the M1 MAC Mini is wireless / bluetooth capable when it is not?

I'm surprised that the company have not solved this with the different OS updates - unless there is a problem with the actual build of the M1 mac mini - in which case they should own up, do a product recall and offer a rebuilt / redesigned version. But of course that would cost millions, damage the company reputation and reduce the stock market value hugely - so Apple would perhaps prefer to deny there is an issue at all. Has anyone from Apple gone on record to deny there is any problem with the hardware?

A friend offered sound advice when she said never to buy a new Apple (or any computer) product until it was at least 12-18 months old and any problems had been ironed out. That's my policy from now on.

Louis,

Thanks for the information. A little lag on login while still booting is probably normal. What I run into (and I think this is the common theme here) is not really on booting but on waking the computer after some period of idle time, and the effect can make the keyboard about useless even after logged in. I suspect that many of us are not really even configured to have anything other than the screen actually sleep. Generally, rebooting the M1 seems to be the last ditch option for clearing the Bluetooth issue.

It’s like every week I turn up a new issue with this machine. Only started happening after I disable sleep and it stays on for a couple of days. I have 2nd gen, two-battery keyboard. I’ve gone to switch user to choose restart and end up using the power button because I can’t get the password to enter without a million extra spaces or whatever. Confirmed that it’s this accent thing popping up much more quickly than it should be. I’ll try disabling that feature to see how I get on, but a year later you’d think Apple would have addressed these bugs…

Hey there, this is August 19th 2021... running Big Sur 11.4 in a mac mini 16GB/512GB. I have exactly the same problem with an external keyboard and mouse connected by USB. I tried to move it to the USB-C port and the situation it's the same. This problem it's pretty obscene right? We're talking about the basics here. What can we do? While using edition and post-production softwares it's very important the keyboard, not mentioning to WRITE SOMETHING !!! The mouse also has lagging, gosh.
