Activating target display mode

Hi, can I activate target display mode via a USB C Hub to HDMI cable and from HDMI cable to a Mini DisplayPort Thunderbolt HDMI adapter?

Description: I've been using a USB C Hub to connect my MacBook Pro 2019 to an external monitor via HDMI - works perfect. I recently got an iMac late 2012 for which I bought a Mini DisplayPort Thunderbolt 2 HDMI adapter to connect the other end of the HDMI cable but this doesn't seem fruitful. Any thoughts on why target display mode is not working? Both devices are running Catalina.

Target display mode requires macOS High Sierra or earlier on the iMac used as the external display. It does not work with macOS Mojave or later.
