iphone 12 pro max battery health degrading

I got my new 128GB 12 Pro Max with blue silicon case on the 11/13 launch day. In the weeks since I’ve noticed the battery health has already dropped to 98%. I’ve only used public releases of iOS and haven’t installed any iOS beta’s that would have enabled extra logging functions that could have negatively impacted battery life and health. Optimized charging has been enabled the whole time, and it’s only been charged with a USB-A cable and an Apple 5W charger. I don’t see any apps standing out as battery hogs, and I’m using my phone as much as I did my 11 Pro Max. I’m shocked to see the battery health drop below 100% in the first 6 weeks, and at this rate it will be below 90% by summer 2021. Has anyone else noticed their battery health has dropped below 100% on a 12 Pro Max?

It has nothing to do with chronological time. It is “80% is normal after 500 full charge cycles”. A full charge cycle is from 0 to 100% (or combinations that add up to 100% such as 20% to 70% twice). And you should never let it go to 0% intentionally; that WILL shorten the capacity of the battery if it happens frequently. Ideally, charge it when it gets to 20%, and charge it overnight, every night, with Optimized charging enabled.

Yes that video is pretty accurate! When I first got the phone I thought it was the whole software deal & it being new. Nope, apparently for us here the 12 Pro Max just doesn’t last as long as the 11 Pro Max.

I would have thought Apple would make sure you get at least the same battery life if not more than a previous model. Hopefully the next iOS will help battery life some more. It‘s likely a hardware problem though which sucks for us.

I am very concerned with battery health as well. What’s your current %?

I’ll post the 11 pro Max health here. So 12 max is 92% & 11 max is at 96%.

Both devices were pre-ordered originally and both arrived on time on the release dates. This to me seems off. I know not a direct correlation with battery life but definitely not right. The older phone was used daily, charged/discharged constantly and many many many gaming hours on the device.

I’ll still test it out tomorrow but last I checked it outlasted the 12 max.

Do you know how hard it is to not look at it if it's right there? The temptation is unexplainable.

From the article, I have a few notes. I really don't want to charge my phone overnight. I see that literally everywhere and it's not good. And I can't only charge to 80% because I have to bring it to work and it has to last me the whole day there. So I have to charge to 100.

I really don't want the capacity to lower anymore because I know people who have had theirs for way longer than me, and they're still at 100. They don't charge overnight or let it drain below like 30%, so I followed that but looks like it's not working...

I might not get a new phone for like another 3-4 years unless of course this one breaks. So how do I stop letting the capacity go down like the other people I know? Some of them have the 12, some of them have the XR, and some have the XS Max.

I don't have iCloud backup on, it takes up a lot of room. And charging overnight with my old iPhone 7 was a bad experience, so I never wanted to do it with my iPhone 12. I'd rather unplug it right before I sleep. My friend who charged her iPhone 12 overnight had her capacity drop in like 2 days. Same with my other friend who has an iPhone 11 that's already at 85% capacity after a year and a half.

Yes, batteries are consumables, but how come other people have theirs higher than mine when we do the exact same thing? I don't understand that and I wanna keep mine like theirs.

Unless you are using the same model phone that came off the assembly line at the same time and using it in all the same places with all the same apps and doing all the same things, comparing battery usage between two different phones is meaningless.

i wish too, mine became 99% after 4 months, and then 98% 3 months after that. i'm worried that it'll drop every week now.

What you're describing is well within the normal range of 0.5-1.0% a month. There is no reason to believe it will start dropping that much every week.

i really don't know what to do.

That's an easy one to answer. You do nothing. And, more importantly, you stop checking your battery heath until your warranty is about to end (or your phone stops working properly). If it has dropped below 80% and you're under warranty, Apple will replace the battery.

I changed my battery after several visits to Genius Bar. They Also agreed that 1% drop per month was already abnormal , not to say my 1% drop per week!!

if u look back at ALL DOGCOW MOOF replies , ALL his replies were the same : 1% drop is normal . When I asked him about my 1% drop per week , he said nothing .

Just congrats me to chance of changing battery soon. We are discussing on the problem of abnormal behavior of battery . Most people are still having 100% even after 6M, at least all people around me and the 6 apple staff members whom I have chatted .

I have done. MY BATTERY WAS REPLACED at health of 92% after I gave them the data on dropping of health 2% in 2weeks!!!

THAT’s the answer to U. APPLE DECIDED THAT MINE WAS DEFECTIVE!!!!!! BTW, calibration is for 11 not 12, my friend, dont mix up, I have asked Genius Bar specifically on this. I posted my data on X, XS and 12. The 2nd photo is my monitoring on new battery.

u are using your battery in a killing way, that’s why u are at 90% in 9M

Guess what?

If it hits 80% before one year, Apple will replace it for free.

Either way, it literally makes no difference to my everyday use of the device.

I can't imagine any circumstance why I would care what my Battery Health was unless I noticed it was below the threshold/timeframe for replacement.

Glad they took care of you. I’m surprised they replaced the entire device instead of just the battery. I found an article published by Apple on the actual Apple website under “battery health” that does reference the 80% threshold and that same article says it’s designed to degrade to 80% after approximately 500 full charge cycles, not what most of us posting here have been experiencing.
