Can I wait till I receive my new computer, transfer data, then return it?

I placed an order in December for the new 2020 MacBook Air with a trade-in of my old 2018 MacBook Air. The estimated time of delivery won't be until early February. I recently received the box for my to ship back to Apple to complete the trade-in.

My question is: can I hang onto my old MacBook until the new MacBook arrives, transfer all data from the old MacBook to the new one, then send it back once I know the files transferred successfully from the old MacBook to the new MacBook Air?
