I-Phone 4 Bluetooth pairing with BMW

I have tried to pair the I-Phone 4 to my 2008 5 series BMW unsuccessfully. When I checked compatible phones on BMW website, 3GS was the latest phone. When I called the dealer, they said that BMW may come out with a software upgrade later this year AND I could have it installed for USD 439. What a rip off!! If I would have known this, I would NOT have bought my I-Phone. Isn’t there an APP for this???

In response to the duplicated contacts with an iP4. Check the number of groups you have on your iphone for your contacts. If you have multiple groups do these have the same contacts stored in these groups?

I too had this problem. I finally traced it back to having multiple groups of contacts on my phone. I am a MobileMe user and also sync'd the contacts stored on my Mac with my iphone thru itunes. I therefore had a 'All MobileMe' group and an 'All on my Mac' group, both these groups had the same contacts in them. To resolve this, I stopped syncing contacts from my Mac on my iPhone thru itunes and now when my phone is sync'd with my car I get one set of contacts from the MobileMe group. Hope this works for you.

I have a BMW X6 and no problems to sync by bluetooth with my previous 3GS iPhone. But with iPhone 4 I can pair/sync my contacts but the names's order just changed = they appears in my car as "last name" instead of "firt name" that appears in my iPhone...!. I´ve tried contact with the BMW and they said that the problem is with Apple. So, if 3GS was OK sure the IPhone 4 has a bug... I appreciate any help.

I'm now having trouble keeping my iPhone 4 (v4.2.8) paired with my 2008 BMW 328xi wagon. It was rock-solid for 3 months, and was even fine for the drive back from the airport after a 2-week vacation in the long-term parking lot.

Yesterday, however, the phone would not stay paired. I turned the car off, tried to delete my "old" phone (which is the same phone I'm trying to keep paired), didn't have any success until I left the car off overnight. When I started the car up again, the "old" phone was gone, and I could pair my "new" phone just fine, and all was well...until it cut out again this afternoon.

I've turned off bluetooth on the phone, turned it back on, turned off the car (see above)...sometimes the phone sees the BMW, sometimes it keeps searching. Please note that the pairing worked fine with this version of the iOS up until yesterday.

Ideas?

I too am having problems with my Verizon iPhone-4 and my 2008 BMW 535xi. I got my car in April 2011 (CPO). The phone worked fine with the car until about June. Since then I've had issues. The Bluetooth will drop the connection with the phone. Then the system will lock up. Meaning, I can't delete my iPhone from the settings or turn off blue tooth in settings. Select either and nothing happens. Sometimes the Bluetooth will drop and reconnect, repeatedly in the middle of a call. It is very annoying. Then, in a few days, it will fix it self and work fine for a while. Ugh!!!

I had the same problem, but I rang Apple customer service. Apple's advice: reset network setting on iPhone 4S.

So I did what I was told, went back to 2009 BMW 3 series car, turned pairing...entered passkey (0000), then pulled knob down to go to "confirm passkey," on the screen, pressed knob just to be sure, then iphone prompted me for passkey...entered 0000, and bingo, they are paired!

THANK YOU!!!! I had tried everything else including turning Siri off, location services off, changing the default incoming call setting to headset etc etc. Until I read your post (Oliver2088), I did not realize that you had to enter the code in the car in order for the passcode screen to appear on the phone. I was about to give up and then saw this. Once I followed your directions, I had no problem pairing my 4S. And when my husband gets home, I am going to try the same thing with his 5. Once again, thanks!!

I had the same problem of pairing with BMW. After a few tries, I had figured out how to solve this pairing issue. I think it might be helpful for you.
The pairing problem is not because of my iphone4. It's actually BMW iDrive stupid design. very awkward with that big fat dial. Once you turn on both Iphone4 and BMW to bluetooth mode, the iDrive will first ask you to key in passcode. Although on iDrive it can take any length, but you better enter 4 digits(in my case I enter 0000). Here is the thing you need to do is to push iDrive round dial to confirm the passcode you just enter. Because of iDrive bad design it took me 1 hour to figure out I need to move the focus to "confirm the passcode" to confirm it. After that iphone would display a panel for you to enter the passcode you just entered on the iDrive to iphone(in my case 0000). Then the rest process will be done automatically by itself.
