HDD exit code 8,

I am running Logic Pro X on iMac Catalina (no other software/third party stuff on machine) - suddenly became very slow, to the extent that it was even difficult to shut down. Would not restart normally or in safe mode, but managed to get into recovery mode (very slow). I note that there are two APFS volumes HDD and HDD-data. the data volume tests exit code 0, which is fine, but the HDD volume, which I presume is the OS (11.3gb) returns exit code 8. I have tried restoring OS - 16 hour download with our dreadful internet - at the end of which the machine freezes before starting. Should I restore/format this "volume" before downloading OS software - and is the data safe on the HDD-data 'volume', I don't want to have to download the entire logic suite again!

Thanks

Jeff,

We appreciate you taking the time to clarify the Disk Utility results on each of the volumes.

If you have an Intel-based Mac, you would need to erase all internal partitions on the iMac. You'll find this information in this article: How to erase your Intel-based Mac. Because you'll be erasing all the internal partitions, you would be deleting all the apps installed on the iMac, as well as all your personal data.

If you're still unable to reinstall the macOS, you can reach out to Apple Support for more assistance. You can contact Apple Support here: Get Support.

Take care.

Hello Jeffguitar,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. We understand that your'e having an issue with Logic Pro X on your iMac which is running macOS Catalina.

You've done a lot of great troubleshooting. Based on what you're describing, follow the steps in this article to run Disk Utility and then First Aid: How to repair a Mac disk with Disk Utility

Once the First Aid is complete, try running Logic Pro X and see if there is any change.

All the best.

Hi cp,

Thanks for your reply. Just to clarify, I have already been through the steps (Disk Utility in Recovery mode - which is the only mode this Mac will boot in). There are 3 'volumes' on the APFS system.

HDD, HDD-data, and MOS (which contains only the last version of Mojave OS, no data)

HDD-data tests okay using Disk Utility, as does MOS (both return exit code 0)

HDD returns 'exit code 8 - cannot be repaired' and I presume this contains the Catalina OS

I have tried reinstalling Catalina OS (twice) but the Mac goes through the process of downloading (several hours in my case!), clears the apple logo/progress bar and freezes to a blank screen - no options.

Similarly I cannot Alt/boot from MOS, (Logo/progress bar stops halfway - message in 5 languages to say there was a start up problem - blank grey screen), which should not be a problem as there are no other apps or data on this volume.

My question is should I now format the HDD volume and once again try to reinstall Catalina OS, and will this destroy the Apps on HDD-data (Workfiles are backed up but not the Logic program, which means another lengthy download).

I am beginning to think this is a hard disk failure.

Thanks Again,

Jeff
