Does a Powered USB C Hub pose a threat to my new Mac Mini M1?

Happy New Year to everyone!

I am a proud owner of the Mac Mini M1.

I would like to know if any (circuit) problems would arise if I’d connect a USB C Hub (designed for Power Throughput to Macbooks or other USB C chargeable devices) to my Mac Mini?

Does a failsafe mechanism exist that prevents the Mac Mini from receiving charging current through the USB C Port?

Mac mini, 11.1

The USB-C ports on the Mac Mini M1 support upstream PD (Power Delivery) only - that is, you can charge connected devices via the USB ports, but they will not accept incoming voltage to power the Mac Mini itself.

This is all part of the USB Power Delivery spec where each device advertises what it is capable of providing/drawing.

Therefore you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

Note, though, that you will lose certain functionality through the hub, unless it's a USB4/Thunderbolt hub.
