the left shift key on my keyboard (macbook pro mid 2012) is not working.
support suggested an SMC reset but i need to push the left shift key in order to do that.
what other way is there?

My left shift key was intermittently not working. Apple support suggested I reset the SMC.
Tinkering with the SMC pads seemed to fiddly for my level of experience. So i disconnected the battery - without success.
After some additional research I located the keyboard connector, disconnected and reconnected it (after disconnecting the battery). The left shift key has been working fine since. I hope the issues solved permanently. The keyboard connector is just a tiny piece of foil. Maybe it has become loose over the years and needed some readjusting.
If you feel comfortable physically opening the laptop, then there are SMC Reset pads located on the Logic Board. Unfortunately these pads are hard to find. I don't have access to the Apple Service Guide at the moment which shows the location of the SMC Reset pads. The service guides are unofficially available online if you search for them (moderators will likely remove any links posted). IIRC the information in the service guide is not easy to decipher since they show either a pre-production location or an older model. I recall having difficulties finding the SMC reset pads. I know it is difficult to search for sites with this information as most of them link to the power on pads which are completely different.
Otherwise you can try disconnecting the battery and holding the power button down for a bit to drain the residual electricity from the circuits. I don't know if this will be sufficient or not.
What is your reason for needing an SMC Reset?
