external microphone needs to be plugged in to iPhone AFTER opening facebook live? and doesn't work on videos?

When live streaming using iPhone 8 I (finally after many many hours of research and trying stuff out) managed to get external mics to function instead of the internal mic. I did this using USB out of mic pre-amp (or mixer) into camera kit adapter (so I can get audio to the stupid lightning port - why did apple think that was a good idea?) BUT...

It only works once the app is running...so I have to start a livestream with the inbuilt mic and then plug the external in - wait 7 seconds - and then proceed...not very professional. If I plug external mic in first it simply doesn't recognise it and I am just left with inbuilt mic.

When recording videos the iPhone simply doesn't recognise the external mic at all.

Is there some way of telling the iPhone which mic to use instead of being treated like a dummy and forced to live with what the phone thinks I should use?

iPhone 8, iOS 14

Hi MartinDaleDK,

Thank you for giving us the chance to assist you with your iPhone. You can count on us to do our best to assist you or get you pointed in the right direction.

We understand that you are experiencing issues using external microphones.

Do you experience the issue when using an EarPod with Lightning connector?

Are you experiencing the issue when using native apps?

Also, we'd like to set your expectations. The Lightning to USB Camera Adapter is intended for transferring photos and videos from your high-resolution digital camera to your device.

We can't guarantee that the Lightning to USB Camera Adapter will work as an adapter for an external microphone and other accessories.

Please keep us posted.

Take care!

MartinDaleDK,

Thank you for keeping us posted. We understand the challenge you are facing. However, unless your iPhone is unable to automatically detect the external microphone on an EarPod with Lightning connector, your iPhone is likely working as expected. If you feel like there is an issue with how your lightning port is detecting accessories, we recommend that you reach out to us here so we can take a closer look into the issue: Get Support

As we've mentioned on our previous response, the Lightning to USB Camera Adapter is intended for transferring photos and videos from a high-resolution digital camera to your device.

Hi Brian

Thanks for the reply

Do you experience the issue when using an EarPod with Lightning connector? I've not tried a microphone on an earpod (can't find my set)

Are you experiencing the issue when using native apps? Yes. If I record a video using iPhone camera it only uses internal mic unless I plug in external mic (USB) once video is already recording, then there is a 7 second switch over and usually (but not always) the external mic kicks in. There is no way of knowing whether it worked until I listen back to it afterwards.

We can't guarantee that the Lightning to USB Camera Adapter will work as an adapter for an external microphone and other accessories. Yeah, I get this - but this is one of only 2 options available since Apple brought in the lightning port instead of mini-jack. The only other option involves a lightning/mini-jack adapter (TRRS if I remember right) and THEN I would have to get adapters that go from XLR to minijack TRRS. Old iphones use TRS (like almost everything else in the world) and I have lots of these lying around that are no use any more, but no TRRS mini jacks...and am I guaranteed that they will work if I do invest in yet more adapters? Unless you know a 3rd option...I've used many internet hours on this now!

Cheers

Martin

I am having this same problem since the last iOS update, after having success for months. Bought new mics and everything, wasting money. Apple should “guarantee that the Lightning to USB Camera Adapter will work as an adapter for an external microphone and other accessories.” $1200 device. I really hope you guys will address this, especially since many people are having to use live streaming for so much now in the COVID era. Most of us are using our iPhones to accomplish this need.
