Hello Mnkna,

Thank you for reaching out in Apple Support Communities. We understand the names of your contacts is not appearing correctly. We'll be happy to help.

We suggest to temporarily turn off, "Contacts" for the account your contacting are being synced too. Then, you can turn, "Contacts" back on and see if it helps update the names of your contacts correctly. For the appropriate steps, please follow the section in this article that says, "Turn Contacts on or off for an account": Manage and delete contacts on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Please keep us posted with the results.

Kind regards.

Mnkna,

Thanks for getting back to us and for providing that update. Are your contacts synced to iCloud or through a third party email service provider? To verify that you can see which email account has, "Contacts" toggled on in Settings > Accounts > select your email account > Contacts.

In addition, were there any recent changes on your device, prior to the contacts unexpectedly merging?

We look forward to hearing back from you with an update.

Cheers.

Hey guys,

I'm having the same problem as Mnkna and would like to add my experience.

Either the iOS contacts app, or the Mac contacts app (it's hard to tell afterwards) merges contacts with the same first name, if one of them or both lack the last name. The result is having one contact with first and last name, and it has both data, including phone numbers and birthday.

I've been searching the forums and the only advice that came up, was to give all contacts a last name. Even if you don't know it or they don't have one. That's not really helpful if you have loads of contacts.

The phones are connected to an Exchange Server 2016 and sync contacts/calendar/emails, but I had these issues with previous Exchange versions as well.

It happened to me recently when I restored my data to a new iPhone. No other changes were made.

Hope there will be a solution to that.

Cheers
