pbs kids games app loses sound when switching apps

on ios14.2 on an iPad 8, when switching back and forth between the PBS kids games apps and any other app with sound, the pbs games app loses sound and makes the games impossible for my 21 month old (who trapped in a body cast, the only reason we have the iPad in the first place.)

is this a known bug? I’ve already checked sound settings, notification settings, anything that would affect the sound output of the app and it’s still a problem.
