Apple Watch ECG Crown Button Not Working

Hi Community,

I can no longer get ECG readings on my Apple watch 4 series. I'm in the UK Region and ECG feature worked fine before. My watch OS version is 7.2. The watch is snug against my righthand wrist, and when I launch the ECG app it instructs me to hold my finger on the crown but does nothing. I tried with different fingers and slightly moving as well but ECG app doesn't start the reading. Twice the app started showing erratic reading. I see many users having similar issue but not sure what is the solution.

Contacted Apple support and was quoted almost £400 to take the watch for investigation. If the watch has hardware problem then like to like watch will be given.

I suspect that you have tried everything under the sun, but I would suggest one more thing: clean the back of your watch with soap (be gently!!!) and do the same for the crown. The ECG uses conductance to read your heart beats; any additional resistance/conductance would prevent the watch from reading your ECG.

One thing you can try to make sure the watch can read your heart beats is to use the Heart Rate app. A little known trick is that if you hold your finger on the crown when using this app, the watch won't use the LEDs on the back of the watch but rather use the same hardware that is used for ECG. If you can't get a reading doing so, I'm afraid to say that a replacement is in order.
