iPhone X Max Wi Fi issues

My iPhone X Max continues to drop out of my wifi 5ghz setting and reverts to 2.4ghz. I have two settings on my router so I can see which one it is connected to. The problem is very frustrating because when it reverts to 2.4ghz, which is often, I cannot open Safari and other Apps or, if so, takes forever. Sometimes I can get it to reconnect but other times the choice of wifi doesn’t even come up on my iPhone! In the end it is easier to just turn off wifi and use my mobile data where the iPhone works perfectly?? Not a practical solution! I have tried all the tips given eg resetting network settings etc but there is no change! My husband has an iPhone 8 and doesn’t have any issues!! Does anyone have a solution? I strongly suspect it is the phone itself with the fault??

Hey Maria L,

We see you're encountering issues with your iPhone remaining connected to the 5GHz band on your router.

You've taken some great steps so far in attempting to isolate the issue. Can you also confirm the following?

  • Does this behavior happen when you move further away from the router? The 5GHz band on most routers while significantly faster, also has a much smaller range within which it gives top speeds.
  • If there's a case on your iPhone, take a moment to remove it. Does the issue persist or performance improve?
  • Do you encounter this issue with multiple Wi-Fi networks?

We'd also recommend reviewing this article for common causes of Wi-Fi interference and how to best isolate / address them.

If the issue persists, let us know the details requested in our post, and we'll continue from there.

Cheers!

Hey Maria L,

Glad to hear we were able to help shed some light on the issue.

While the 2.4GHz network is considerably slower in certain cases than a 5GHz one, it should still be usably fast. Generally information, webpages or videos should load relatively fast. If that is not the case in your home, there may be a few reasons:

  • If your router is located behind a piece of furniture or inside an entertainment center, if you're able, try moving it to a more open location. Some materials, namely metal and concrete, can block Wi-Fi signals. This would likely improve performance on both of the routers bands.
  • Do you know if your Wi-Fi is slow in other locations? Such as at work, or a public hotspot, etc? While speed is subjective, it would be helpful to know if this iPhone feels any faster on networks outside of your house.

You can also take steps to reset the network settings on your iPhone, this resets the Wi-Fi settings of the iPhone including networks, passwords, cellular settings and VPN/APN settings. You can do so under Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. These steps are outlined in Step 7 of the following article:

Let us know the results from there, and we'll proceed based on that info.

Take care.

Hi karina184.

Many thanks for your input on this issue. My router is in my study on top of a bookshelf and gives clear signal to all our devices including the TV throughout the apartment, even if I close the study door (wood). The TV is on 5GHz and streaming etc is excellent. Our laptops, iPads, etc are all on the 2.4GHz signals and all respond well except for my iPhone X!! We are in Australia and on NBN Aussie Broadband and we have not had any issues since switching to them. Prior to that we had an ADSL connection with Telstra and I had the same problem with my iPhone X with that internet provider. I was hoping the new type of connection and provider would be an improvement but unfortunately not!

I have done lots of experiments including some speed tests on my iPhone X and my hubby's iPhone 8 and checked general performance comparisons. My iPhone test came up as 15.3 download and 13 upload on the 2.4GHz and 54 download and 19 upload on 5GHz (quite a significant difference between the 2 signals!!). On the iPhone 8 I got 22 download 15.4 upload on 2.4GHz and 54 download and 19 upload on 5GHz and the iPhone 8 safari appeared to respond quicker than the X on the 2.4GHz!

The most major difference I found is that the iPhone 8 stays connected to 5GHz regardless of where I am in the apartment, including at the dining room table where the iPhone X loses the 5GHz and it does not even show up on the screen to reconnect unless I move away from that spot!! This has more or less convinced me that the iPhone X itself appears to have the problem.

I rarely if ever use public internet connections, so I have yet to see if that shows any change? I have done all the usual stuff, turn off turn on, reset network settings etc etc.

At least with Jeff's and your assistance, I have now narrowed down that the X will work great without its cover on and when on wifi as long as it can pick up the 5GHz in our apartment, and that the only dead spot is at or near our dining room table!! I will now need to decide whether I go to Apple to see if there is a fix (have my doubts judging by other blogs on the X and wifi issues) or put up with it until it's time for the X to go to "phone heaven" which, with the increasing costs of iPhones, won't be anytime soon!! Shame as otherwise it is a fantastic phone!!

Thanks again to you both, as it has helped me understand my phone better and when I need to just turn off the wifi and use mobile data, which always works perfectly inside or outside!! Worse part is remembering to switch wifi back on!!

Regards

Maria

Hey Maria L,

Thanks for the details of the steps you've taken.

We're glad we were able to help isolate the issue and work towards a solution. The speed difference between 5GHz and 2.4GHz is to be expected, as are the discrepancies between the speed of the iPhone 8 and iPhone X. One further thing we can recommend is if you opt to get a different case, check to make sure its design or materials aren't made out of signal blocking materials such as metal.

Should the issue return or worsen, we'd recommend reaching out to Apple Support for assistance at your convenience.

Hi Jeff W. Thank you so much for your suggestions and assistance! I have removed the phone cover and must say the iPhone seems to be responding better generally! And you are right also regarding the signal I walked around and found one spot in our apartment where the 5GHz drops out! Trust it to be at the dining room table where I go through my messages each morning after breakfast!!! Since new this iPhone has been terribly slow when using wifi at home and I only started using 5GHz after reading about it in a blog where others had wifi issues. Works perfectly on 5GHz so it would seem that the IPhone X Max has a hardware issue because it is hopeless when connected on 2.4GHz !! Have you heard of it being a common fault? Don’t know if it is worth going back to Apple to complain??!! A shame as I otherwise love the phone !!! 🤨
