Apple charger cable splitting

I am a loyal Apple customer and this summer I bought a replacement charger for my macbook pro to replace one that I had left somewhere.

Within a few months the I noticed that the macbook charger rubber cable had started to split exposing the copper wire below making it dangerous to use. I had spent the best part of £100 on this charger and expect much better quality than this from an Apple product. I called support up and reminded them of my rights under Consumer Rights Act 2015 and was offered a replacement.

I was not sure that this would not happen again and asked about a refund instead. I was told I would have to return to point of sale. I travelled into central london four times on my bike but the queues at the Apple Store on regent st were astronomical and it did not feel safe given the pandemic especially given the specific danger COVID-19 poses to those of us who are Black. Given that stores will be closed for the forseeable in the UK I called Apple again to ask arrange replacement being sent out. I was told that this was accidental damage (I used this charger as normal and this has never happened before over the past 10 yrs as an apple user) and that on top of the funds spent on an Apple certified charger I would have to pay for a repair.

I am confused as to why Apple's position has changed in mere weeks - anyone have any customer experience/ advice to share??

On the back of this lack of customer care I have just cancelled an order for a new macbook - I expect much better from Apple customer seervice.

My experience, If you are still under warranty— Apple replaced my charger free of charge, shipped over-night express and I had it the next day; with a return shipping for the worn charger/cable.

If you are not under warranty you are on your own I suspect.
