acking up a disk

I have bought a new external hard drive as my mac was running out of space. Tried backing up all night. Thought it was done but my macbook still tells me im running out of space.It can not even update itself for the same reason.

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 10.12

Backing up does not remove files from your internal drive. You need to delete stuff.
