I lost my contacts after iOS update. How do I retrieve them?

That means they were synced to an email account added to the iPhone. Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts and tap each email account listed then enable Mail, if an option. Check Contacts after turning each email accounts Contacts option on as you should see your contacts appear again pretty immediate, then you'll also know what account they are synced to.
