Remove passcode

I sold an iPhone 7 to someone in another state. The iPhone didn't erase properly before I sent it and the new owner is being prompted for a passcode (one that I don't recall setting). I tried removing the device from iCloud and although the device is not listed any longer, the new owner is being prompted for my Apple ID and password. Any suggestions?

It is possible the phone is not able to connect to the Internet and not able to get the message you have removed the device from your device list in iCloud.

Just to double check, you did do this? -->

Remove a device from Find My iPhone on iCloud.com - https://support.apple.com/guide/icloud/remove-a-device-mmfc0eeddd/icloud

One thing I would not do is send the person your Apple ID and password!
