Cannot update Apple Watch 3. Says there isn't enough space even though I haven't used any!

I haven't been able to update my Apple Watch 3 normally for the past 2-3 updates. The update is only about 400mb, but when it tries to install the phone says that 2.7GB is needed. I have no songs, no podcasts and no additional apps on my Watch and I still only have 2.4GB available. So not sure what's going on...

I have found that I can update if I reset my watch to factory defaults first but seriously that can't be the way to do this. It's been working perfectly fine for years. I have submitted a feedback to Apple months ago but so far they haven't looked into it. Anything else I could try?

To Free-Up Storage

For songs, see the "Remove music from Apple Watch" section in:

Add music to Apple Watch - Apple Support

and for pictures, see the "Limit photo storage on Apple Watch section in:

Choose a photo album and manage storage on Apple Watch - Apple Support

Also, try unpairing and pairing your watch again and restoring from the backup just created in the unpairing process. This deletes all temp and corrupted files and re-indexes the file system.
