Apple logo flash at startup

New iPhone 12 Pro. At startup the Apple logo flashes super bright for a brief second then the screen goes dark for about 10 seconds before the Apple Logo re appears at normal brightness to finish the startup. I’ve had iPhones for years and never had the logo turn on and then off during startup. Is that Normal for the 12?

After more than two weeks, I think that it is time to sum up the situation: the "flashing Apple logo" issue described by Blue-per does not occur when we unbox and boot the iPhone 12 (mini)/12 Pro (Max) for the first time, it occurs when the iPhone is already set up.

In most cases the phone performs normally after it boots up. Some users found hardware problems when using their new iPhone (phone needing to be connected to power in order to boot up, screen burn-in, battery charges very slowly, camera not taking HDR photos, etc.).

In my opinion those problems are not related with the flashing logo at startup, because they are very different from each other and they are isolated cases. They are just coincidences.

That does not mean that the flashing logo is not an issue: there are iPhone 12/12 Pro which boots with the (classic) steady Apple logo and some iPhone 12/12 Pro that do not, so it is obviously not a normal thing. It is not a "new feature" or "expected behavior".

After reading other answers on the forum, we can deduce that the issue does not occur on iPhone 12/12 Pro that were shipped with iOS 14.1 or with iOS 14.2 pre-installed, it (mainly) occurs on iPhone 12/12 Pro shipped in January with iOS 14.3 pre-installed. As a matter of fact a lot of people returned the device during the last weeks and got a new one with the same problem.

Now, we suppose (and hope) that the issue is part of iOS 14.3 and not in the hardware of the phone. In this case Apple should be able to fix it with an update, maybe already with a sub-dot-release (iOS 14.4.X) or later with iOS 14.5. There are some comments in favor of that supposition too, where people noticed that issue after updating from iOS 14.2 to iOS 14.3.

On the other hand, it is strange that (most) iPhones who updated the operating system from 14.2 to 14.3 did not experience the issue. And it is even stranger that I read a reply from a user who encountered the problem already on iOS 14.2. Those facts contradict our supposition above, and maybe the flashing logo has nothing to do with iOS 14.3.

I am sure a lot of people have this problem too; they do not notice it, because nowadays we do not shutdown and restart our phones very often. And even if they do that, they (probably) don't keep looking at the boot screen for issues.

It is very hard for us to guess if it is a software or a hardware problem. Only Apple can give us an official answer, and in order to solve the problem as soon as possible I ask you to continue upvoting this and other similar posts (clicking on "I have this question too"), commenting if you have some news from Apple and reporting the case to the Apple Support.

There is no backlight on OLED displays.

LCD displays have a backlight and the LCD blocks various amounts of light from the backlight from being seen.

OLED displays have individual LEDs that light up to present a picture.

If it bothers you, make an appointment to have Apple Support look at it.

It’s kind of a characteristic of OLED; it can handle off well and mid to high brightness well but it doesn’t do dark greys without banding.

OLED TVs have long had the same issue.

the issue on a new phone for me doesn’t start until the PHONE is charged to 100%. I have tried several different new phones and after restoring iCloud backup either by phone or PC, it DOES NOT do it. I did this last night on a new phone and turned it on and off several times and it didn’t do it. I put my new phone on the charger and charged to 100 percent and then tried it again and the logo flashed. IT DID not do it until I charged my brand new phone to 100. This has happened to two different phones.

Has everyone tried to leave alone after the initial flash and then returned a minute later?

I did that on the advice of several people here and I see that it has started before after the initial flash and following dark screen I kept pushing the on button. But on the advice of a few here, I left alone snd looked at less than a minute later, and the phone is on.

So I’m advising everyone here to try that first. Because as they said it’s only cosmetic then.

What’s happening is the logo isn’t staying on until the phone restarts, like its supposed to. Rather than flashing - going off, and coming back on - it should come on and stay on until the lock screen appears. It’s not a major bug, just a quirk in the startup process. The phone is taking no longer to start than it should. What’s interesting is that Macs have always displayed the Apple logo 2 or more times when starting. This is the first time I’ve seen it on an iPhone.

It is absolutely NOT common to ALL iPhone 12’s running iOS 14.4 as is evidenced by the fact that 3 people in my family alone have iPhone 12’s that do NOT exhibit this behavior and have never displayed it since the day that they were purchased. Only iPhone 12’s manufactured after mid December 2020 appear to display the behavior. In addition, they do not all display the behavior out of the box. Some do and some develop the behavior after weeks of normal use and without any additional updates. IF it is a “cosmetic” software glitch then why, pray tell, do all iPhone 12’s not display this behavior?

Just out of curiosity, do you own an iPhone 12 yourself? If so does it display the behavior or not?

I think that "returns" are handled on a case by case basis, each depending on its own particular set of circumstances.

I bought my phone from Apple themselves, unlocked (no SIM card) paid in full with a credit card.

After about 2 or 3 days I received my SIM card from Sprint/T-Mobile and noticed the problem straight off. Before I even charged the battery or activated it I called Apple Support. They did not acknowledge the problem but offered to let me return it right then and there. I really wanted to keep the phone at that point and told them I would have Sprint turn it on and update the OS first.

It was at that time that I found this discussion going on and decided it was not isolated problem. There were over 3,000 "I have this problem too" at that time.

Our service provider, up to their usual standards, could not get it totally functioning without five different attempts spanning two days. Frustrated, it was then I decided to return/exchange it.

When I called Apple back, there was no discussion of why I wanted to return it. They sent me a link to a page of instructions and a prepaid mailing label. It was only after all arrangements were made for return and trade-in cancelled was I asked if there was some reason other than "I just didn't want it anymore"?

I then told him about this discussion and Sprint's problems but it really didn't seem to matter as this was after authorization of return was given.

Got an email late yesterday that they had received the phone, refund should be credited within five days.

I've been buying Apple products for well over twenty years and, at least for me, their Support has always been outstanding.

Hello everyone I would love to share with you my experience with the same problem ( flashing at startup) first of all I want everyone suffering from this problem to RELAX because this problem now is from the past . You don’t need to do anything to your phone don’t lose your data just wait for the next update or the following one remember you don’t need to do anything only update from apple can solve that . Why I am sure ? Because I did change my iPhone 12 Pro Max for 8 times but when I decided to wait for the next update as they told me the problem has gone after the second update .

I hope that help bros
