Apple logo flash at startup

New iPhone 12 Pro. At startup the Apple logo flashes super bright for a brief second then the screen goes dark for about 10 seconds before the Apple Logo re appears at normal brightness to finish the startup. I’ve had iPhones for years and never had the logo turn on and then off during startup. Is that Normal for the 12?

iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 14

After more than two weeks, I think that it is time to sum up the situation: the "flashing Apple logo" issue described by Blue-per does not occur when we unbox and boot the iPhone 12 (mini)/12 Pro (Max) for the first time, it occurs when the iPhone is already set up.

In most cases the phone performs normally after it boots up. Some users found hardware problems when using their new iPhone (phone needing to be connected to power in order to boot up, screen burn-in, battery charges very slowly, camera not taking HDR photos, etc.).

In my opinion those problems are not related with the flashing logo at startup, because they are very different from each other and they are isolated cases. They are just coincidences.

That does not mean that the flashing logo is not an issue: there are iPhone 12/12 Pro which boots with the (classic) steady Apple logo and some iPhone 12/12 Pro that do not, so it is obviously not a normal thing. It is not a "new feature" or "expected behavior".

After reading other answers on the forum, we can deduce that the issue does not occur on iPhone 12/12 Pro that were shipped with iOS 14.1 or with iOS 14.2 pre-installed, it (mainly) occurs on iPhone 12/12 Pro shipped in January with iOS 14.3 pre-installed. As a matter of fact a lot of people returned the device during the last weeks and got a new one with the same problem.

Now, we suppose (and hope) that the issue is part of iOS 14.3 and not in the hardware of the phone. In this case Apple should be able to fix it with an update, maybe already with a sub-dot-release (iOS 14.4.X) or later with iOS 14.5. There are some comments in favor of that supposition too, where people noticed that issue after updating from iOS 14.2 to iOS 14.3.

On the other hand, it is strange that (most) iPhones who updated the operating system from 14.2 to 14.3 did not experience the issue. And it is even stranger that I read a reply from a user who encountered the problem already on iOS 14.2. Those facts contradict our supposition above, and maybe the flashing logo has nothing to do with iOS 14.3.

I am sure a lot of people have this problem too; they do not notice it, because nowadays we do not shutdown and restart our phones very often. And even if they do that, they (probably) don't keep looking at the boot screen for issues.

It is very hard for us to guess if it is a software or a hardware problem. Only Apple can give us an official answer, and in order to solve the problem as soon as possible I ask you to continue upvoting this and other similar posts (clicking on "I have this question too"), commenting if you have some news from Apple and reporting the case to the Apple Support.

I contacted support and this is what they told me. Apparently, Apple is still not yet aware of the issue *sigh* I don't want to replace my unit again for the 3rd time.

  • Thanks again for those details. With regards to your question, not necessarily all units manufactured or distributed on that date range are affected as we currently don't have any official reports on our end about it. Apple tests its products and features before shipment/release, but when issues do emerge, Apple works quickly to resolve them. Be rest assured that we'll be further investigating this.
  • The best next step is to get this escalated to our specialized team over the phones with our Apple Engineering already.

CarLey09, my experience is the same except I never had to press the power button twice. I bought my iPhone on 2/3. After setup, I ran the update to 14.4 (came with 14.3). After that, I just pushed the power on button once. I’d get the logo flash and about 5 seconds later, the normal logo displayed until the Lock Screen appeared. As I side note, I went to the Verizon store yesterday and requested a new phone. Request was denied, they said it was a software issue.

From a different continent, konnichiwa from Japan! Same problem here with my newly purchased iPhone 12 Pro 256GB (Blue), initial iOS when unit was purchased was 14.3, immediately updated to 14.4 and then noticed the problem, so not sure whether the issue was already present for 14.3.

I need to press the Sleep button for about 8 seconds, then the Apple logo flashes super bright for a fraction of a second, then the screen goes black, and if I immediately press the Sleep button again, the regular Apple logo appears after about 10 seconds and the phone then boots normally. All in all, it takes about 20 seconds for the phone to become usable.

Even more worrying, often the initial long press of the Sleep button does not have any effect and I have to go at it again.

It appears that I may be in the minority, but my phone began without the flash issue (14.3 installed out of the box) I updated to 14.4 and still had no flash issue at startup and it ran for about a week seemingly normally. Then the flash issue began, for no apparent reason that I can put a finger on, and and a few days later the touchscreen began to become less responsive and a few days after that apps began to freeze. Only a restart would resolve the issues and then only for a short time. This is the 4th phone I’ve had that developed the flash issue and the only one that I held onto long enough to see what would happen over time. I have not added or changed any apps in any way so there should be no reason for apps that have been running fine to suddenly freeze. The phone has been treated gently — no drops, falls etc — so no reason the touch screen should be becoming less responsive. I’d submit that this issue might possibly be both hardware based AND software based at the same time since initially, and even after setup and usage for several days, the phone ran normally for a short period of time before it’s performance began to deteriorate. I’d also say that the issue may not be merely cosmetic for all users. I’m headed back to the Genius Bar to get their input, but I think they will likely suggest just replacing it with a new phone as they have the other 3 times. And I suspect the replacement phone will, within a week, develop the exact same issues.

Apart from flashing of apple logo please observe that initially apple logo is at max brightness and then another logo comes with dimmer brightness. Then kindly have a check on brightness- i checked with

My iphone 11 pro vs iphone X vs 12 pro

Result is that iphone 12 pro screen is the dimmest screen.

But if you consider in back of mind of apple logo that flashed. - may be they tweaked it to be dimmer to avoid screen damage they are aware of. Its my best possible guess.

But please do check this in your phones as well.

Hi,

As someone who’s been coping with the flashing logo on my device for over a month, here’s a quick tip on powering in your device.

To switch on your device, hold the power button until you see a quick apple logo flash (this should be about 2-3 secs). Immediately release the power button once you see the flash and wait... Your phone should boot up normally. I’ve tried several iterations and this is the only one that works 100% of the time.

Let me know how you get on.

Cheers,

My iphone 12 pro’s Apple logo flashing once bright on startup, goes dark, then after a few seconds comes back on and boots up. I am super annoyed. Been waiting 4 months for this phone and now this!!! So earlier this week I went and Bought a second device(iphone 12pro) and it was fine untill i had to charge the battery, and BOOM!!! now my 2nd device is also flashing apple logo on startup. So i have 2 brand new iphone 12 pro’s that’s both got this issue! i am so worn out and just drained dealing with this! No one can give me answers. The

technicians at istore ruled it as a hardware issue. Saying its the motherboard or logic board that is faulty; Yet after Numerous calls to “apple support” sending them videos and reports from the technicians, they say their engineers are working on it and that they dont have answers yet...? But its been reported since January by hundreds!!! How can the leading engineers at a company or rather an “tech. empire” like “apple” not be able to figure this out ???

I am super disappointed with this experience. Must say I’ve never thought I’d see the day where an apple product would give me this type of hassle! Especially not a high end iphone! I personally think they know what the problem is but trying to sweep it under the carpet and not get a couple million end users in uproar if the truth goes public/viral.

very unhappy, disgusted and disappointed customer.

I have the same issue on my iPhone 12 Pro. The apple logo flashes at start up then followed by dark screen. I need to press the power ON button several times before the phone starts. The Software update is IOS 14.4. I hope Apple resove this issue. Thank you.

No, you DON’T need to press the power ON button several times. Release the button when the logo first flashes, and WAIT. The phone will start whether you press the power button several times or not. It will take 15-30 seconds to start.

The “issue” is not an issue. It is a minor cosmetic bug. To turn on the phone, press the Side button until the logo appears (or “flashes”) then let go. Wait 15-30 seconds for the phone to finish booting.

If you have a battery life problem that is totally unrelated. Start a new thread for advice on how to fix that issue. No one will see it who can help in this thread.
