Missing Contacts

Yesterday when I was texting someone, my phone glitched and the text screen went away taking me back to my main screen. When I opened the messaging app back up half of my contacts were no listed, it was just their phone numbers. I also noticed that some of my earlier texts were deleted as well. When I went to my contacts to see if it was just an issue with the texts, half of my contacts were missing. I tried shutting my phone off and turning it back on but it did not fix the issue. My phone is current with software update 14.3

iPhone 12 Pro Max, iOS 14

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities, brooke_a2019!

We understand you're missing some contacts after your iPhone randomly sent you back to the Home Screen. We'd be happy to provide information to help you address this.

First, go to Settings > Contacts and check what the Default Account is set to. This will help you determine where the issue may be and where you can look using the next steps.

Then, go back to Settings and at the top you should see your name. Tap your name and go to iCloud and make sure Contacts is enabled. Check if your contacts have returned if you enable it.

Also, go back to Settings > Contacts > Accounts and make sure all of your accounts are there. If they are, go to each one there individually and make sure the contacts option is also enabled. Check again for your contacts.

Let us know what you find or the results of these steps.

Have a great day!
