M1 MacBook Air - not printing

My new M1 MacBook Air (Big Sur 11.1) can't print anything or open the print queue (it's a a Brother printer, a few years old but not ancient). It's not the printer, it's working with other computers. I've seen other advice online to go into the Library folder and click the "Open Using Rosetta" box for the printer, but after doing that and re-starting it's still not printing. Any other ideas?

Hello Bonnie,

It sounds as though you're having issues setting up your Brother printer with your MacBook Air M1. The steps you've walked though so far are great troubleshooting steps, but to clarify have you completed the steps outlined in Add a printer on Mac? If not, complete the steps there.

If you continue to have issues printing after verifying the printer has been added using those steps, can you clarify if you're receiving any error message? If so, what error are you receiving? It's also recommended to restart the Mac by clicking the Apple logo towards the top-left, followed by Restart in the dropdown.

Have a great day!

Hi Bonnie,

Those additional details greatly help with working towards a resolution, and opening using Rosetta is a great step. With the issue you're facing you can try to print from another user account on the Mac. If you don't have an alternate user account you can find the steps for creating a test user in the following article.

Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

If the issue persists in an alternate user you would want to contact Apple for additional support. You can find their contact details via the Get Support website.

Take care.

Hello, My printer is set up and shows correctly in my list of printers and scanners. And I have re-started a few times. When I try to print, I don't actually get an error message, it's just dead and does nothing (I have also confirmed my printer is online and ready to receive a print job). The print job box does not pop up in my menu bar like it used to on my old MacBook, and when I click on the "Open Print Queue" to look and see if it's listed in there, that button flashes but doesn't actually open the print queue. From some online searching I've seen this is a known issue with the new M1 MacBook, but other than the "Open Using Rosetta" fix that I tried and didn't work, I haven't found any other advice. Thank you!
