Deregister old phone number that I can no longer access

How am I supposed to deregister an old number that I don't have access to if the link makes you put in the phone number to send a code to? I don't have that number anymore?? That's kind of stupid.

I've already clicked on the link that says you can do it online. It just makes you put in the old phone number to send a code, but that makes no sense because I no longer have that iPhone.
