Other than charging it on top of iPad Pro .

Perhaps you would be well advised to select a case that is compatible with both your iPad and Apple Pencil. There are several to choose from - such as STM Dux and Studio series cases:

The second generation Apple Pencil can only be charged by a 2020 iPad Air4 - or 2018/2020 model of iPad Pro.
