Activation lock

So I am helping my mother with a MacBook Air and I am unsure what she did. I have it now and it is stuck on the Activation Lock Screen. She does not remember her password but does have her Apple ID. I go through the recovery for the password and I get the code from her phone and place it into the computer and loops me back to this screen with red lettering. What am I doing wrong and how do I move forward from this loop.

Hi Dkrochon,

Glad to hear that you have the correct Apple ID.

If you're looking to reset the Apple ID password, you can do so here: https://iforgot.apple.com

Or, try resetting it from the Mac when connected to a different Wi-Fi network.

About Activation Lock: If Find My Mac is enabled on the Mac, Activation Lock prevents anyone except the owner from erasing and reinstalling macOS. This anti-theft protection ensures that thieves cannot set up the Mac as their own.
