pages numbering problem

I have a brand new I mac and the latest version of Pages yet I can't number the pages of my report because the numbers tab is greyed out! The information on the help page doesn't do any thing towards solving the problem! Has anyone experienced this problem?

If you hover your mouse pointer over the header (or footer) area of any page you should see a long wide rectangle split into three sections. Click into any of these and you'll get the option to insert a page number :



With various formats:



Is that what you mean by the "numbers tab"? Can you post a screen grab? If you're creating a Page Layout document (as opposed to Word Processing) it's possible that you've obscured the header and/or footer with one of your design elements:
