Mac OS Big Sur Download Problems

My computer won't let me download Mac OS Big Sur. I am eligible for the update but when I go to system preferences and click "update" nothing happens. Help?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.15

How much free space does your mac have, you need at least 35.5GBs off free space before it will download.

If you are able connect your MBA to your router via cable, if you can only use WiFi then move your MBS

as close to the router as possible.

When downloading do not use the mac or any other devices that share the same internet connection.

Anything on your mac you do not need on a daily basis should be copied over to an external hard drive.

Items that usually take up the most room are images, movies and music.

Once you have copied over the files and confirmed that the files have copied over successfully

then you can delete them from your MBA.

It looks like I don't have enough storage! any recommendations as to how I can free up storage? I have already erased all of my mail which helped a little bit but I still need more space.
