Some of my MacOS apps can't open file

It happens to my Quicktime Player and Preview. Sometimes when I try to open any random file format that is defaulted to QuickTime Player or Preview, the apps is called up but nothing happens. I could try to use the "Open" function of both app and find the same file, tap on it, no response still.

When I reboot the Mac, sometimes it will work sometimes it doesn't. Does anyone know what is the cause of this phenomenon?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.1

Hey there, and welcome to Apple Support Communities, komahr!

From our understanding, you’re unable to open some files on your Mac using Preview and QuickTime. We know how concerning that can be, and would be happy to assist.

To get started, while the article here isn’t specific to your issue, it has some great troubleshooting steps that can help: If an app unexpectedly quits, stops responding, or won’t open - Apple Support

Let us know if that fixes things for you. If not, do you receive an error message? If so, what does it say? Additionally, does this occur with specific file extensions?

Kindest regards!
