I too was new to Macs and found it disappointing to have this issue on a M1 device, that is supposed to have tight hardware and software integration.

I went to an Apple Store and got a replacement but that too had the same issue.

While I was at the store, I checked this on two Intel MacBook Pros, 13-inch (4 thunderbolt ports) and 16 inch.

They both had the same scrolling issue when browsing Apple's own product webpages.

This is purely a macOS Big Sur (11.2.x) issue. I think it was less noticeable on 11.1 which came installed.

Can confirm that M1 MBP trackpad scrolling has improved in Apple apps such as Music, Preview, Mail and App Store.

There is still some stutter when the scrolling is coming to a stop (inertia).

I will still report this through Feedback, but this is the most/only improvement we have had for this issue, since macOS 11.0.

Maybe all our complaining finally paid off! 😌

Got my first MacBook Air 2020 with the core i3 256Gb

Confirmed having the same issue which suggests it isn't the M1 but maybe just the new OS

Running Big Sur 11.4 atm.

I can see them fixing this with maybe a software update in the coming months though so not a big deal with me

The computer is a certified speed demon with everything else . iOS on iPad and iPhones has spoiled us lol.

Same problem with my MacBook Pro M1 (Big Sur 11.4). I also have my old MBP 2011 with high Sierra and I can confirm that in comparison with 10 years old machine, scrolling feels choppy and unresponsive. Especially in safari when Inertia kicks in. Only app that I don’t have complains with is apple podcasts, it works without any issues. So my thought is, new MBP M1 really fast (like crazy fast), but not smooth.

I got an M1 Air, the 16gig version more than 6 months ago. The first iteration of Big Sur was fine. After I updated, three times now, the mouse pointer jumps, better, not smooth at all. There isn't a mouse, track pad setting fix. Ive tried it. I am hoping the next update will solve this.

Common Apple, get with it ASAP. Don't disappoint your biggest consumer. iPhone Edge to iPhone 12. From PowerBook 100 to M1 Air. And all the models in between. This is my first complaint through all the years. 😇

This is extremely disappointing.

Apple prides itself over customer satisfaction and the basic action, everybody performs, on a daily basis is scrolling webpages, documents, etc.

The M1 devices might have great compute performance but it is a small fraction that is editing 4K videos and rendering 3D models.

Even developers spend a lot of time scrolling through code and forums.

I have an iMac late 2009 with 10.11.6 and the UI outperforms the Mac Mini M1 completely. It's a rocksolid UI experience and although I have 'mistreated' it al lot it never fails or feels unstable.

Mouse in wired mode somewhat improves the low res feeling of the UI but in general it's still horrible, I'm running 11.3.1 now. I don't understand why none of the tech reviewers mention this issue. Sure, the chip is fast but it's the UI I have to work with for 8 hrs per day. It's unbearable and I have no idea if or when Apple is going to fix this.

This is really frustrating. Scrolling up and down is my biggest dilemma. My productivity is being affected and considering that I’m a first time user of mac I was really expecting for more. Really disappointing. Has anyone noticed that laggy scrolling even with the use of arrow up/down keys? I mean it’s obviously not that smooth compared to when you use the track pad. This is driving me nuts.

At Best Buy I was immediately noticing the OS wasn’t smooth and could stutter. Minimizing windows, the scrolling widgets bar on the side, scrolling web pages. It just felt underpowered and sluggish. Especially after comparing between Window laptops. I though maybe it was just jarring after looking at high refresh rate screens in the store. But at home, I noticed the whole user experience was not up to par.
