Setting up a child's phone

my minor daughter's phone is set up under my apple id. There is no sim card in the phone but want her to be able to send messages to her friends using her email address. However, we are getting each other's text messages and I can't figure out how to make this stop.

You’ve got to get a separate Apple ID for her; you should not be sharing an Apple ID. Set up Family Sharing and add her (new) Apple ID→What is Family Sharing? - Apple Support. This would also be a useful link→Use parental controls on your child's iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

In order to not get each others messages, she needs her own Apple ID as Lawrence stated. You'll also need to put your SIM into her phone for the purposes of activating iMessages as the phone will need to send an SMS to activate it. Once that's done, you can put the card back in your phone. Note that if iMessage ever gets deactivated which can happen because the phone was not connected to a network for too long, you'll need to use your SIM to reactivate.
