Very unpleasant smell in new AirPods Max cushions and case

Is it me or do the AirPods Max have a very unpleasant smell to the case and the cushions? I have even followed the instructions on cleaning them but the smell is still there. It seems to be the smell of the natural smell of material. What kind of materials or chemicals are causing this smell?
