How can I Clear Hard drive memory

I did a total reinstall by holding command option R, which was successful. ( I am selling this late 2012 iMac 27") The computer has a 3 TG hard drive. There is now nothing on the HD except for the Mac OS applications, no documents, photos, music, movies etc. Apple TV was never opened. The HD still says there is only 966 mg left of 3TB space available. The one bar in the storage tab shows a "Shadow" of used space. Does the Catalina operating system and the few Apple supplied free applications take up 2 TB of space? How can this be? (My new iMac only has 1 TB and I have already installed 3 Adobe suite apps and I still have tons of room.) How can I clear out the 3TB HD?

Thanks fernfoto

HI, Success but it was much easier. As I was reformatting a thumb drive to MacOS, for the bootable external, I saw on the Disk Utility that it would let me erase data on the Mac HD - Data . For some reason there were 2 HD- Datas. The first one was greyed out but the 2nd one let me delete the shadow data and it worked!, took only a few seconds too.

Too bad that I didn't know to look there in the first place, too obvious and easy I guess. Thanks for your help. I learned a lot.

The Macintosh HD - Data is a Volume containing the User Files. If one what's to Totally remove Everything including the afore mentioned Macintosh HD - Data, that involves booting to an External Drive ( possibly a Bootable Installer ). Then and only then Choosing the Upper Most Drive ( Not Volume ) and erasing the entire drive
